Programs

E-learning Centre

The government through Kenya ICT Trust Fund has supported our organization by helping us acquire Eureka Learning Software to help us supplement education program for students from grades 1 to 12. The program uses technology aided curriculum specific courseware that focuses on self-paced learning and discovery in different subjects such as Maths, Sciences and English. We provide exciting and dynamic practical hands-on 21st century learning experiences, one of its kind in Kenya, to the students of Kibera, thus preparing students to the challenges of competitive global economy in line with the National Educational Technology Standards for Students by International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Through the core subjects and 21st century themes, we empower the poor students with Information, Media and Technology Skills, to enable them move beyond the traditional classroom model into collaborative engaging learning environment hence catch up with their counterparts who are blessed to stay at school because they can afford school fees. Because the number of students is big and our facilities are limited, we can appreciate any well-wisher who may support us with such facilities, e.g. computer Servers desks, or rent for additional training rooms.
Computer Training

Computer literacy is not only important to school leavers in order to acquire jobs in the labor market but also poor but competent slum dwellers who feel they have been left out in the digital era.

We have indiscriminately trained general slum dwellers and school leavers who might be interested in computer literacy in order to cope up with the digital world. Since our capacity is still small, we cannot still cope up with the demand. We have few computers and a small space to help us do this. Many people who have acquired training with us have acquired jobs and others have started their own IT-related businesses. Donating to us one computer will enable us train more than 36 students in one year, and this will change lives of these students. The country and the world will realize a positive growth.
Early Childhood Education

Promotion of Early Childhood Education and Development
Kibera Slums with its population of around one million people means that the growth rate is higher by any standard. Children are born out of the poverty stricken parents due to lack of employment opportunities. Children do not therefore find their way to Free Primary Education since pre-primary education is very costly for an average Kibera residents. KISCODEP endeavors to bridge the gap through supporting children to realize their dreams of enjoying Universal Education as envisaged in Millennium Development Goals. We run our own ECD School supporting children from Baby Class, Nursery and pre-unit classes. We have over 100 children. Every year, our children who are in pre-unit usually make it to government primary schools thereby fulfilling our objective.
Donating to us $10 will pay one child’s school fees for two months. It can also pay 3 days wages for one teacher.

OVC

Support for Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVCs)
It is a belief that the future of any country has a direct correlation with the way children at the moment are brought up; uneducated and badly fed and sick children hold a dark future of any nation. This means the country’s leadership will lack desirable knowledge and strength to run the country, citizens will be susceptible to diseases and hence there will not be sound economic growth because the manpower requirements and the know-how will be weak to exploit the available resources.

With the few support we get from our well-wishers, we give support to the few children who are mainly total orphans. We provide clothing, food, books and tuition fees at ECD and primary levels. We intend to extend the support to include school fees at secondary level. Many children qualify to Secondary schools but cannot be able to join Form One since they cannot afford school fee costs.

Given enough support, we shall be able to extend our support to the many children in Kibera who are victims of circumstances.

Home-Based Care

Home-Based Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS
In the past those who had been infected with HIV virus were only left to die; even close relatives could not agree to be identified with the victim. As a result, death was inevitable partly due to lack of care and partly due to stigma.

KISCODEP has played a leading role in helping slum dwellers know their status and taking the necessary care while preaching the abstinence. Those found positive are referred to special health service providers for specialized treatments. By doing this, those victims have improved their health status and are aware that adherence to doctor’s instruction help them continue to prolong their lives.

Out of the victims, women are the head of the households as most of them had lost their husbands due to the scourge. Such families require basic needs. Some collaborating NGOs assist periodically in providing food, though normally minimal.

We have our own social workers who normally visit the households of the victims in our program. By doing so, we establish the health and domestic status of the victim fro our subsequent action.
Savings & Loans

Investment being a function of income, no improvement in life can take place without involvement into businesses. KISCODEP has been in the forefront of promoting small businesses not only to its members but also to the beneficiaries i.e. People Living with HID/AIDS. The most vulnerable are the women who usually are helpless with their children after the death of their husbands. Engaging in small scale businesses has enabled many beneficiaries to create wealth through savings and getting loans through local micro finance organizations. This has enabled the beneficiaries to afford basic needs e.g. food, clothes and school fees etc.
